Regarding this post, I have received a few emails stating that they are very happy with the Wordpress.com community. Since MichaelOnSecurity is a very new weblog that is hoping to build a community, why not move into one? They allow for full domain hosting for $10, so it is a rather inexpensive experiment. I prefer the simplicity of the Wordpress writing system to that of Drupal’s. It’s not that Drupal is a bad choice, but it really should be used when you need a tried and true CMS. Wordpress fits wonderfully for writing.

Now, there are a few cons to moving to the Wordpress.com infrastructure:

theme editing is very limited

no custom plugins

advertising is a no-no

Since I’m focusing on content over appearance, and I don’t have any interest in monetizing the site, neither of these should really get in my way. If things don’t work out, I can easily move back to my own server and retain the link structure.

Styled Bits runs the Wordpress weblog platform. It’s easy to install and maintain, outside of worrying about PHP vulnerabilities. I like to take a peek at what others are doing from time to time, and noticed that the plug-and-play version of Wordpress has a built-in community of sorts. I wonder how well it works: do Wordpress.com users follow the various tags of interest and contribute in meaningful ways to each others’ weblogs?
